When you write beautiful things, you’ve got me hooked. Melissa Blake falls into that category. She writes a blog called “So about what I said…” And every week or so, she posts what she calls “Letters To My Future Husband.” By last count, she was up to Letters to My Future Huband #36.
In them, she tells her husband-to-be what she’s dreaming out, what she’s looking forward to, and what she wants him to know. No, she hasn’t met him yet, but that’s the point.
Here, for example, is what Melissa wrote to her future husband this week:
In my mind, I can have any date I want—the date of my dreams, actually, man of my dreams included. So you know what? I think it’s about time you stepped up your game a little . . . I, for one, can’t wait to see what you come up with. Hopefully, a lifetime of things. Until we meet…
Why do I love Melissa’s letters so much? Because she’s not vaguely wondering if she’ll meet someone someday. She’s a true optimist: She’s already clearly expecting she will. Her clarity and her certainty are like launching ramps to getting what she wants. When you decide you will succeed, when you decide you will get what you dream of, you put yourself on the path to having it. I’m talking about a job, a love, a child, a marriage—when you put it out there that you are prepared to take on whatever challenges lie on the path between you and your future, the world will go about finding ways to give it to you.
Follow Melissa Blake’s lead, please. Put your dream out there. Talk to your future husband or wife or life partner. Write a letter. Start mastering your best cookie recipe so you can knock their socks off the minute you meet. Prepare your heart for how good it’s going to feel when the love of your life—your half-orange—walks into your world and flips it upside down for the better.
And, like Melissa, tell them to hurry up already! After all, as Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) said in When Harry Met Sally, “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Until you meet…
